After/Thought Writing Project

We’re indie. And you know that. That’s why you’re here.

If we intended to come in fancy wrapping paper, frilly and ornate, neatly placed within the confines of the perfectly crafted box, we would let someone else do this. We’re more like the shoebox your dad stuffed some random junk in, wrapped it in yesterday’s old newspaper and called it a gift. We’re okay with that.

We’re proud to introduce After/Thought Writing Project. An independent literary initiative.

We aim to bring quality crafted writing and stories that put heart right on the page. We want to publish vibrant, lush, books that traditional houses would turn a blind eye to. If you can write a book that makes us feel like a lazy Sunday afternoon at Grandma’s, send it our way. If you write stories that will make us seek psychological support after reading, even better. Get that over to us.

We will be extremely selective. In our first year, we plan to publish only four books. Keep that in mind when submitting to us. If we remain small for now, we can curate exactly the kind of work we wish to represent us. This allows us to provide the highest quality we can while we grow and expand After/Thought.

As of right now, we are opening submissions in the following categories.

Fiction.

What We Are Looking For: Literary fiction and any subcategory therof.

We might consider Book Club fiction with strong writing and a clear hook.

Your manuscript should be no more than 90,000 words.

Your manuscript should be no less than 60,000 words.

We will look at anyone’s work. You do not need an agent to submit to us.

Send a query letter first with the first chapter attached as a PDF or Word document.

Poetry.

What We Are Looking for: Any category. We will look at traditional or experimental poems. Freeform, whatever you write.

We will look at anyone’s work. You do not need an agent to submit to us.

We will publish any number of poems not to exceed 150 pages worth of work.

Send a query letter first with up to three poems attached as a PDF or word document.

We are not looking for non-fiction submissions at this time.

Rights, Contracts, and Logistics

We will look to produce a quality paperback and ebook version of your work. You will have complete input through the process. And if accepted, one of our editors will work directly with you to see your book come into the world.

We will not pay an advance in the beginning.

We will pay a 50/50 split of net profits. This will be clearly defined once the cost of the book’s production has been determined. You will get 100% transparency from us with the documentation to back it up. If we are going to do this, we are going to do it right.

Your book will be sold primarily on Amazon and be available in most English speaking markets.

We are working on further distribution and will update this page once this is fleshed out.

All Submissions should be emailed to: afterthoughtliterary@gmail.com.
